Thank you for your interest in the Sri Lankan Blue Whale
Project. As much as I would love to respond to your query individually, I am
sometimes unable to do so and I do apologise for that. As such, I have put
together this list of FAQs, which should help provide you with the answers you
seek.
How can I help?
There are two ways in which you can help.
Firstly, this
project is funded through competitively obtained grants and fellowships. As you
can imagine getting grants is a long and continuous process. If you or anyone
you know would like to contribute financially to this project, please use the
PayPal donate button on the right hand side of the home page. All funds will be
used to cover fieldwork expenses and purchase equipment. Any amount is helpful
and goes a long way to unraveling the mysteries of these blue giants. I will be
in touch to let you know how your contribution was used.
Secondly, if you or anyone you know has visited Sri Lanka to see the magnificent
blue whales and would like to contribute photographs to the photo-ID catalogue
- please contact me on whalessrilanka@gmail.com. If you are keen to send in
your images - don't forget to send your full name so you can be credited for
your efforts within the photo catalogue. These images will not be used for
anything else unless discussed otherwise. For more details on how we use these
images please click here: http://bit.ly/Rg4FHe
When is the best time
of year to see blue whales around Sri Lanka?
Off the southern coast whale-watch tours run from
December-March while off the east coast the whale-watch season is still being
established. This does not reflect the presence or absence of whales but
rather, the onset of the two monsoons that drive the climate of the countries
within the Northern Indian Ocean.
I am not at liberty to recommend any specific whale-watch
companies, as I have not used the services of all that are currently available.
Do you take people
out on your research boat?
Unfortunately, due to budget constraints leading to time and
boat size limitations, I am unable to accommodate non-scientists on board the
research platforms.
I would like to
photograph the blue whales for pleasure. Can you help?
I am sure you understand that with the ongoing research I am
not in a position to help with these requests. There are companies in Sri Lanka
that can however help with relevant permits etc. Please try searching on
Google.
Can you tell me more
about this project and the research you do?
Please watch the following selection of short documentaries
